Chicago — A Georgia man who was shot over the weekend after allegedly breaking into a home on Chicago’s Northwest Side is now charged with residential burglary.
Jeremy Tyler Polfliet, 27, remained hospitalized on Monday as prosecutors detailed the allegations against him in felony bond court.
Family members were fast asleep when Polfliet entered their home in the 3600 block of North Newcastle around 1:20 a.m. Sunday and opened one of the bedroom doors, according to prosecutors.
But Polfliet awakened the family dog, who started making noise, alerting one of the homeowners. The man got out of bed and allegedly saw Polfliet walk to the basement and hide in a crawlspace.
Prosecutors said the homeowner retrieved his firearm and warned whoever was in the basement to stay there because the police were coming.
Polfliet poked his head out, and the man again warned him to stay put. He didn’t.
Instead, prosecutors allege, Polfliet began walking toward the armed homeowner, who saw something in Polfliet’s hand and fired one round, striking Polfliet in the arm.
Polfliet stayed put after that, and police arrested him on the scene.
Prosecutors said Polfliet has no criminal convictions.
Judge Charles Beach ordered him to pay a $7,500 bail deposit to get out of jail once he is released from the hospital.
