An electrical pole was severed in two, jeopardizing public safety when a Carthage citizen fleeing in a sedan from law enforcement crashed head-on into the pole on N.C. Highway 690 in Vass. The accident site was about five miles from the overpass bridge exit off U.S. Highway 1 at approximately 9 a.m. March 7.

A sheriff’s vehicle was damaged, and the sedan being chased had extensive damage.

Injuries to the drivers were minor.

Two sheriff deputies and an undercover law enforcement official redirected traffic from the accident site.

The chase began after sheriff deputies answered a call about a distraught man at a home on Spring Lane in Carthage, said Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields in a news release.

The man fled the scene in a vehicle, drove through a private residence’s property, onto the highway, and intentionally rammed a sheriff’s car on Union Church Road, continuing to drive toward Vass. The sedan and sheriff’s vehicle collided at the intersection of White Rock Road and U.S. 1 Highway in Vass.

Alan Dean Patrick II, 29, was arrested and charged with one count of felony flee to elude arrest, one count of assault on a government official, two counts of injury to personal property, speeding 90 in a 55 mph zone, driving while license revoked, reckless driving-wanton disregard, failure to stop at stop light, and passing in a no-passing zone.

Patrick is being held in the Moore County Detention Center under a $105,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court on March 16 and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
