Chicago — An eight-time felon who allegedly offered to sell a woman’s stolen car back to her — along with her pet Shih Tzu that was inside the vehicle — for $350 has been sentenced to prison. Officials said she got her car back, but her dog was never found.
The woman’s Toyota RAV4 was stolen when she left it unattended in the 600 block of South Wabash last March. Her 7-year-old Shih Tzu, Lily, was inside the car along with her laptop and other property.
Police recovered much of the property from two men arrested while sitting in a different stolen car the next day. But Lily was not with them.
Not long after those men were arrested, the woman started to receive calls from a number she didn’t recognize.
She answered one of the calls, and a man’s voice offered to sell her RAV4 and her dog back for $350. The woman agreed to meet the man at McDonald’s, 2525 South Martin Luther King Drive, to make the deal. Then, she called the police.
Police arrested Jerry Kimble, 32, when he arrived with the woman’s car, prosecutors said. But he didn’t have Lily.
Kimble, who was on parole at the time, pleaded guilty on January 26 to aiding or abetting the possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Judge Stanley Sacks sentenced him to three years, with 457 days of credit earned while in custody.
Kimble reported to prison on Tuesday, but his parole date has not been published. He can expect to receive a 50% sentence reduction for good behavior.
