A driver intentionally backed into a Chicago police officer who pulled them over near the Field Museum on Friday evening, prompting one cop to fire at the offender’s vehicle, according to a CPD media statement. No one was shot, but the injured officer suffered a broken leg.

Police pulled over a car in the 1100 block of South Lake Shore Drive at 8:12 p.m. because it may have been involved in an aggravated battery to a police officer incident earlier this month, CPD said.

After pulling over, the driver reversed into an officer who was walking toward their car. CPD said one officer then fired at the car, but the department did not say if the injured officer was the one who discharged their weapon. The fired round struck another car in the area, but no injuries were reported from the gunfire.

CPD said the injured officer was listed in good condition.

The driver sped away from the scene, but police pursued the vehicle to the 7200 block of South Vincennes and arrested two people who allegedly ran from the car.

COPA, the city’s police oversight agency, is investigating the incident because an officer discharged their weapon, officials said.
