Chicago — Attempted murder and escape charges have been filed against a man who allegedly stuck a Chicago police officer with a car and then tried to escape from Area North police headquarters.
Tajze Mullins, 23, will appear in court for a bond hearing on Sunday afternoon. More details about the allegations against him will be released then.
Chicago police said officers pulled Mullins over in the 1100 block of South Lake Shore Drive around 8:39 p.m. Friday because his vehicle resembled one that was wanted in connection with another incident.
As officers walked up to Mullins’ car, he put the vehicle into reverse, intentionally struck an officer, then drove away, according to the allegations. The cop suffered a broken leg. CPD said an officer at the scene fired a gun at the car that struck the officer, but the bullet struck another vehicle. No one was shot.
CPD pursued Mullins to the 7100 block of South Lafayette, where he was arrested after a brief foot chase.
Later, police said, Mullins tried to escape from custody. As CWB Chicago reported yesterday, a prisoner being held by Area Three detectives broke out of a holding room by busting through the ceiling tile.
After discovering the escape, cops pulled down ceiling tile throughout the office as they tried to find the escapee. They eventually got him, but not before destroying their office.
Mullins is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault of a peace officer, escape by a felon and obstructing identification.
