You may not recognize David Howard Thornton, but if you’ve seen Damien Leone’s Terrifier or Terrifier 2, you’ve seen him in action. He’s the man behind the makeup, bringing contemporary slasher icon Art the Clown to life. It’s thanks to his physical comedy training, and experience being an actual clown, that he’s able to not only make Art terrifying but strangely funny, too.

We sat down with Art the Clown himself to talk about the evolution of the character, where he wants to see him go next, and more.

Terrifier 2 is in theaters now. You can watch the first film here.
